Connecting with your Neighbors
Thanks to sponsorship from Hawley Market, Dominick’s Neighborhood Meat Market, and Southern Charm Property Maintenance, we’ve hosted several cookouts, allowing neighbors a chance to meet & mingle!
Connecting with your food
One of the most satisfying activities seen in the garden has been children and families coming to plant their favorite vegetables, checking on their growth, and coming back to harvest the finished product! Both children and adults are often surprised by what they see as the produce grows!
Connecting with your creativity
Thanks to a grant from CNY Arts we’ve been able to host a number of art workshops in the garden, including drawing, painting, faery-dwelling building, and pumpkin carving/decorating which will be held on Thursday, October 31st at the Halloween Party in the Garden.
The Hawley-Green Cultivating Community Garden has quickly become a hot spot of positive activity! From kids planting carrots to all ages participating in painting and drawing workshops, not to mention the cookouts!
So far all of the garden supplies have been sponsored by a grant from the Greater Syracuse Landbank, the art classes have been sponsored by CNY Arts, the Cookouts have been sponsored by Hawley Market and Dominick's Neighborhood Market, and the grocery giveaways have been supported by CNY Blessing Box (thank you!)
John from Southern Charm Property Maintenance plans to continue pursuing grants to fund the garden and NEHDA plans to continue serving as the fiscal sponsor for those grants, but grant funds are often highly restricted in how they can be used.
One of the things granting agencies often look for is community buy-in, and another is the availability of matching funds. Donations from community members help to show community support and provide funds for us to use as matching funds when applying for grants.
Volunteer time often also counts toward matching funds and for demonstrating community buy-in and we've been very lucky to have quite a few volunteers sharing their time with the garden. If you're interested in volunteering with us please visit nehda.org/garden.
